DIY 101 FOR TERRARIUMS AND CONTAINER GARDENS

Create an outdoor ecosystem in your own home. DIY Terrariums and Container and Gardens are great way to create something one-of-a-kind.They are fun to do, a pleasure to take care of and make a great gift!

Read below for EASY, low maintenance open air terrarium assembly and unique container garden ideas: 

LET'S GET STARTED

Open air terrariums and glass jars are easier to maintain than sealed versions. Cacti and succulents don't need deep or fancy intricate soils for drainage, just a layer of sterile sand atop potting soil will work just fine.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

• - Open air glass terrarium or container garden pot

• - Sterile Potting Soil, the kind with vermiculite works well

• - Sand (small bags are available at most big box hardware stores) we used a brand called "Desert Soil Cover" brown sand. Play sand is fine, too.

• - Your favorite succulents or small plants, (choose plants that have similar growing needs)

STEP ONE - Clean your container

STEP TWO - Place at least 1 inch of gravel, sand, or pebbles at the bottom of your container.

STEP THREE - Add a 2" layer of potting soil, fresh, with nutrients

STEP 4 - Nestle your chosen plants after loosening root balls

STEP 5 - (optional) Add a blanket of Moss or Mulch to keep soil moist

STEP 6 - Add any statues ot finishing touches

Remember to water your plants as recommended; often a light misting from a spray bottle will do the trick

Care for your terrarium as you would other houseplants: Prune damaged leaves, add water when the soil is dry, air out a closed terrarium once a month, and never add fertilizer, which encourages growth. In a terrarium, size is everything -  and smaller is better!
